Village of Palm Springs resident, James Jamison, celebrated a special birthday today (September 25, 2020). Mr. Jamison, who lives on Springdale Boulevard was recognized for turning 100 years old! Village Mayor Bev Smith, Vice Mayor Patti Waller and Council Member Doug Gunther were part of a contingent that celebrated his birthday with a Proclamation, balloons and a birthday cake.
Mr. Jamison, born in Philadelphia, served in the United States Air Force from 1943-45 and retired as a 1st Lieutenant. He flew B-17's in World War II flying 35 missions over Germany for the 388th Bomb Group.
Jamison was a school teacher in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Florida teaching science in middle school and high school. After moving to Florida in 1966 he retired as teacher in 1987 having taught at Jefferson Davis/Palm Springs Middle School.
Mayor Bev Smith honored Mr. Jamison with a Proclamation:
WHEREAS, JAMES JAMISON was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on September 25, 1920; and
WHEREAS, before joining the military, James obtained his college degree from Westchester State Teachers College in Pennsylvania; and
WHEREAS, During World War II, James served our country for over two years in the United States Air Force where he rose to the rank of 1st Lieutenant; and
WHEREAS, James served as a pilot and flew B-17, “Flying Fortress”, heavy bombers for at least 35 missions over Germany as part of the 388th Bomb Group; and
WHEREAS, during his service in the U.S. Air Force, James received the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the Air Medal with 5 Oak East Cluster; and
WHEREAS, after the war ended, James moved to New Jersey and during his summers off from teaching, he operated a popcorn business on the Ocean City Boardwalk; and
WHEREAS, James worked as a teacher in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida; and
WHEREAS, James moved to Florida in 1966 and has been a resident of the Village of Palm Springs since 1990, and in 1999, he bought a condominium in Regal Palms; and
WHEREAS, In June of 1987, James retired as a teacher from the Palm Springs Middle School; and
WHEREAS, James currently has 2 sons, 1 daughter, 4 granddaughters and 8 great grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, the Village Council, Staff and Residents wish to honor James for this truly historic event; and
Now Therefore, I, Bev Smith, Mayor of the Village of Palm Springs, Florida on behalf of the Council, do hereby extend best wishes to James Jamison on the occasion of his 100th birthday, with sincere congratulations for many more happy, healthy and active years.
