[ARCHIVED] Village Staff Visits Palm Springs Middle School Civics Classes for City Government Month

PSMS Civics Class
On Tuesday, October 25th, Village Manager Richard Reade, Police Chief Tom Ceccarelli, Land Development Director Kim Glas-Castro, Village Clerk Susan Caljean, Library Director Suvi Manner, and Parks and Recreation Director Bill Golson made presentations to two Civics classes at Palm Springs Middle School to discuss the role municipal governments play in making communities safe and viable places to raise a family and/or operate a business.

Village Manager Reade explained to the classes how the Village of Palm Springs has a Mayor and 4 other Council Members who create policy and make decisions about the overall direction of the Village, who then have full-time staff members to carry out the day-to-day operations of the Village. Then all of the Department Heads spent some time talking about their respective areas of responsibility. Then the students got involved in a mock Council Meeting where a proposed new Chick-Fil-A restaurant was being presented to the students acting as Mayor and Council as well as residents who had questions or concerns about where the new restaurant should be located. This interactive discussion helped the students understand how decisions are made in the Village and what steps are taken to approve such requests.

The students were then invited to a future Village Council Meeting to participate with the real Council Members on the dais where official business of the Village will be discussed and voted on.
