On Tuesday, November 8th, during the Presidential Election, Voters will also decide on a ballot proposal to increase local sales tax by one cent from 6 percent to 7 percent. It is estimated that this surtax will generate revenue of approximately $2.7 billion over the course of up to 10 years, from Jan. 1, 2017 through Dec. 31, 2026. However the ordinance will sunset if total aggregate distributions of surtax proceeds equal or exceed $2.7 billion on or before September 1st of any year. The purpose of this surtax is to fund infrastructure repairs, renewals and replacements, and maintain current levels of service countywide
Surtax dollars may be used for public buildings, equipment, technology and security systems, purchase school buses, public safety vehicles and equipment; construct, equip and repair roads, bridges, traffic signals, streetlights, sidewalks/pathways, parks, drainage systems, shoreline and wastewater infrastructure, and recreational and governmental facilities.
The School Board, County and Cities will each establish independent citizen oversight committees to audit spending for compliance with approved projects. The committees will meet monthly and provide an annual report. Members will receive no compensation.
